Matt Taylor has been praised by Shrewsbury Town legend Paul Merson for his wonder strikes against Portsmouth. Taylor scored two stunning goals in Oxford United's 3-1 win at Fratton Park on Saturday, helping his side to move into the top half of the League One table.

Merson, who played for Portsmouth between 1986 and 1994, was impressed by Taylor's goalscoring prowess and believes that he has the potential to be a top player in the division.

"Matt Taylor's goals were absolutely brilliant," Merson said. "He's a great goalscorer and I think he's got the potential to be one of the best strikers in League One.

"He's got great movement, he's good in the air and he can finish with both feet. He's also a hard worker and he's always willing to run the channels.

"I think he's a great signing for Oxford United and I'm sure he's going to score plenty of goals for them this season."

Taylor's goals against Portsmouth were his eighth and ninth of the season, and he is now the club's top scorer. He has been in excellent form since joining Oxford United from Bristol Rovers in the summer, and he has helped the team to make a strong start to the season.

Oxford United are now seventh in League One, and they are just three points off the play-off places. Taylor will be hoping to continue his goalscoring form when Oxford United travel to Portsmouth tomorrow.
