Major Earthquake Strikes Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Magnitude 6.0 temblor shakes Big Island, causing damage and injuries

Residents urged to stay indoors as aftershocks continue

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii's KÄ«lauea Volcano area on Saturday, causing significant damage and injuries. The earthquake, which occurred at 6:32 am local time, was centered about 6 kilometers south-southwest of Volcano, Hawaii, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was felt throughout the Big Island and caused widespread power outages, landslides, and road closures. Several buildings were damaged, including the KÄ«lauea Visitor Center and the Jaggar Museum. Emergency responders are currently assessing the damage and treating those injured.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors as aftershocks continue to rattle the area. The USGS has issued a yellow earthquake alert, indicating the potential for additional strong aftershocks. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has activated the state's Emergency Operations Center and is working with local agencies to coordinate response efforts.

Scientists believe that the earthquake was caused by the movement of magma beneath KÄ«lauea Volcano. The volcano has been erupting continuously since 2018, and the earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events that have occurred in the area in recent months.

The earthquake is a reminder of the active volcanic and seismic hazard that exists in Hawaii. Residents are urged to be prepared for future earthquakes and to have an emergency plan in place.
