Basketball Team to Participate for First Time
NEWS LEAD: South Sudan has secured its place at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, marking the nation's third appearance at the prestigious sporting event. The South Sudanese athletes will compete alongside the world's best from July 26th to August 11th, 2024.
South Sudan's Olympic debut occurred in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Games, followed by their participation at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 (rescheduled to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Notably, one of the South Sudanese athletes, Guor Marial, competed as a refugee at the 2012 London Olympics due to the ongoing conflict in his home country.
This year, South Sudan will make history by participating in the men's basketball tournament for the first time. The team's inaugural Olympic basketball match is scheduled for July 28th. The entire nation is brimming with excitement and anticipation for their athletes' performance in Paris.
